If you’re looking to showcase a new app design or simply see how an image will look on an iPhone screen then there’s a good chance you need an iPhone mockup generator.
Thankfully, there are quite a few of these tools to choose from. However, not all of them are worth your time and money.
We’ve tried out all the major iPhone mockup generators so you don’t have to, and put together a list of the best ones to make it easy for you.

How we tested the tools
To properly review each iPhone mockup generator we judged them in four main categories:
- The volume of mockup templates
- Tool usability and features
- Quality of the final images
- Overall value for money
To have a fair comparison of the different tools we used the same design with every tool:
If you’re not sure what a mockup generator is, here’s a quick explanation.
They’re simply online tools that let you easily place a design or screenshot onto an existing image. This can be a simple image of a product by itself (e.g. an iPhone or a t-shirt) or a real-life life image (e.g. someone holding an iPhone).
The great thing about online mockup tools is that they allow you to quickly create mockups without Photoshop or any other complex design software.
The main downside of using a mockup generator is that you lose some of the customization and flexibility you would get if you used a tool like Adobe Photoshop.
However, there are so many quality mockup tools and a huge range of online mockup templates available that you’re sure to find some quality mockups that have what you’re looking for.
Placeit is a multifaceted online design software that allows you to create a range of designs including logos, videos, social media content, and a lot more. The tool’s most popular feature is by far the mockup generator – particularly their t-shirt mockups.
They have a huge library of iPhone mockups, with over 2,400 at the time of writing which is significantly more than any other tools in this list.
If you’re looking for a lifestyle image (e.g. a specific type of person holding an iPhone), or a simple image of an iPhone by itself, or the perfect image for an app screenshot then you’ll find it all on Placeit.
Their library is so extensive and has mockups for most of the latest iPhone models too. They even have plenty of free templates too.
Customizing their iPhone mockups is ridiculously easy. All you do is select a template, upload your design, adjust the colors, and you’re good to go. It literally takes seconds.
iPhone mockup we made with Placeit:
- Some free templates
- Individual mockup: $7.95
- Monthly subscription with unlimited downloads: $14.95
- Annual subscription with unlimited downloads: $89.95
Smart Mockups is a mockup generator that has been around for a while now. They have a great range of high-quality mockups, including plenty of iPhone mockups.
Their library of iPhone mockups isn’t as quite as extensive as Placeit’s (with over 950 at the time of writing) however, there are plenty of great templates on offer. Check out our Placeit and Smart Mockups comparison article.
Like Placeit, you can find all the different kinds of iPhone mockups. From lifestyle images, simple product images, to mockups that are perfect for app screenshots.
You can even create custom mockups with Smart Mockups. This allows you to upload your own images, and turn them into a mockup. So, if you have a range of iPhone images this could be a great feature for you.
Smart Mockups has several product integrations that make it stand out from other tools. in this list, including one with Canva that gives users the ability to import designs directly from their Canva account.
The product is definitely one of the top mockup generators with plenty of templates for many other products and niches. You can find them in our t-shirt mockup generators and book mockup generators articles too.
iPhone mockup we made with Smart Mockups:
- Some free templates
- $14, $24, or $84 monthly subscription (tiered options) all with unlimited downloads
- $108, $228, or $828 annual subscription (tiered options) all with unlimited downloads
Mockuuups Studio is a little bit different from most of the other mockup generators in this list in that it’s not browser-based. You have to download it to your computer.
The tool is exclusively focused on device mockups – smartphones, tablets, desktops, etc. so if you’re on the lookout for quality device mockups it might be of interest to you.
They have a good range of iPhone mockups with around 460 at the time of writing, and they have templates for all the latest models.
The quality of the templates is great, and they have a good mix of product-only mockup images and lifestyle mockups too (e.g. an iPhone sitting on a bike mount). The team at Mockuuups Studio takes all the photos for their mockups so you won’t find them anywhere else.
The generator itself is also extremely easy to use and intuitive so you should have no problem using it no matter what your experience with similar tools.
Mockuuups Studio also has integrations for Figma, Sketch, and also one for Adobe XD coming soon so if you use any of the tools then it could be a great addition to your arsenal.
iPhone mockup from Mockuuups Studio:
- Free trial: 7 days
- Professional plan: $14.99 /month or $120.60 /year
- Team plan: $19.99 /month or $160.80 /year
Media Modifier is one of quite a few Placeit alternatives but it’s fair to say that it’s a poor man’s Placeit at the moment. They do have a solid range of mockup templates though, including over 350 iPhone mockups.
The range of iPhone mockup templates is similar to Smart Mockups and Placeit in that it covers a wide range of lifestyle and product images. It just doesn’t have as many mockups as those tools.
They are one of the top social media mockup generators around though.
Customizing the iPhone mockup templates on Media Modifier is extremely simple like it is with most of the tools in this list. You can create your mockups in a matter of seconds.
Media Modifier offers a few extra tools that most of the other tools don’t offer including the ability to download your mockups as PSD files.
You can also choose to download your iPhone mockups as a PNG or JPG file. Something that Placeit currently doesn’t offer (you can only get their templates as PNG files).
iPhone mockup we made with Media Modifier:
- Free (images have a watermark)
- $19: Monthly subscription with unlimited downloads
- $108: Annual subscription with unlimited downloads
Previewed.app is one of the more unique iPhone mockup generators in this list. The reason for that is that they are the only tool that offers users 3D mockup images – giving you the ability to change the angles and rotation of the image. It’s really cool.
They currently have over 60 iPhone mockup templates (as well as templates for other devices) which isn’t as many as some of the other tools but their 3D mockups are great so it pushed them up the list.
They are also one of the few mockup tools to offer animated mockups (Placeit do as well) which is a great feature if you’re looking to create promotional content for social media.
You can also frame videos to iPhone screen mockups (and other devices) which is a very powerful feature.
The editor is also browser-based and very simple to use making it a solid option for beginners and intermediate users.
You can even get unlimited downloads of their 2D mockups (at 720p) which is great for those of you on a tight budget.
iPhone mockup we made with Previewed.app:
- Free plan: Unlimited downloads of 2D mockups
- Plus plan: $7 one off fee (gives you 5 premium downloads)
- Pro plan: $29 /month or $228 /year
Like Placeit, Renderforest is another all-round online design tool that not only is a mockup generator but also offers templates for logos, social media, videos, and much more.
Their mockup generator is relatively new but they do have a solid range of iPhone mockups with around 190 at the time of writing, many of which are great quality. We also have them down as one of the best mug mockup generators and billboard mockup generators at the moment.
A feature of Renderforest’s that we particularly like is their mockups packs. They put together similar mockups to make it easy for users to find sets to work with. A couple of great examples of iPhone mockup packs are this one and this one.
Customizing the iPhone mockups on Renderforest is also super easy. You don’t need any prior design knowledge or skills and you can have your mockups ready to go in seconds.
iPhone mockup we made with Renderforest:
- Free mockups (with watermark)
- $3.99: Individual mockup
- $19.99 – $59.99: Monthly subscription plans with unlimited downloads
- $83.88 – $599.88: Annual subscription plans with unlimited downloads
The mockup generator with the largest learning curve in this list is most definitely Artboard Studio. However, they do offer users the most customization options out of any tool as well.
So for those of you looking for a relatively easy-to-use tool that still gives you plenty of control over your mockup designs then Artboard Studio could be a great choice for you.
Due to the layering system in the tool, you customize every element of the mockup templates. You can even create mockups from a blank canvas by using their element library.
When it comes to iPhone mockups, Artboard Studio has around 120 mockup templates at the moment, most of which look great. However, this is quite a bit less than some of the other tools in this list.
If you’re looking for as much control over your designs as possible then you should check out Artboard Studio, however, if you simply want to create good-looking mockups as quickly as possible we’d recommend using another tool from the list (most likely Placeit).
iPhone mockup we made with Artboard Studio:
- Some free templates
- $15 per month for an unlimited subscription
When it comes to premium mockup generators MockupsJar isn’t one of the strongest tools. The user interface is a little bit clunky and not all that intuitive.
That being said, they do have some quality iPhone mockups on the platform. Currently, they have around 150 iPhone mockups which is a decent-sized library.
They also have templates for the latest iPhone models which isn’t something that all the tools in this list have.
You also get your first 20 downloads from MockupsJar 100% for free, which is a nice feature.
Although MockupsJar is a decent tool, if you’re looking for a premium mockup generator we’d recommend checking out some of the other paid tools such as Placeit or Smart Mockups.

- Free plan
- Personal plan: €5 per month or €25 per year
If you’re on a very tight budget and looking for a 100% free mockup tool then should definitely give Mockup.Photos a look.
Not only are all the mockup templates completely free but they have a good-sized library of iPhone mockups with over 400 at the time of writing.
It’s also really simple to use, you just upload your design or image, adjust the size to fit the iPhone screen and then download.
All in all, it takes about 30 seconds but you should keep in mind that you’ll need your image to be close to the right dimensions as the rendering doesn’t work that well if it isn’t.
Most of the mockups on Mockup.Photos are from stock image sites such as Pexels and Unsplash, and the team at Mockup.Photos have turned these images into 100% free mockups.
As a 100% free mockup generator Mockup.Photos is well worth checking out.

If you’re looking for basic iPhone mockup images to promote your website or app design then MockuPhone might just be what you’re looking for.
It’s a completely free tool that lets you easily create iPhone (and other device) mockups in seconds. They currently have around 25 iPhone mockup templates.
The main downsides of MockuPhone are that there are very limited customization options (you can only really add your image or design and that’s it) and also the fact that there are only device images and no lifestyle images to customize.
That being said, if you’re only after basic images then it’s a great option.
Like most of the other mockup generators in this list, it takes no time at all to learn how to use MockuPhone so everyone should be able to jump on and use it straight away.
iPhone mockup we made with MockuPhone:
- 100% free
Vexels is an online graphic design platform that offers a huge library of ready-made graphic resources and designs. One of their many tools is their mockup generator that is super easy to use and has a solid range of iPhone mockups.
At the moment, they have around 20 iPhone mockups, which isn’t a whole lot but what’s there is good quality.
They also offer around 150 iPhone mockup templates in PSD format so if you’re comfortable using Photoshop then you’ll be interested in that range of templates too.
They currently don’t seem to offer any free mockup templates but you can purchase individual mockup templates if you don’t want to get a full subscription.
Like the majority of the tools in this list, Vexel’s mockup generator is extremely easy and intuitive so anyone should be able to jump on and use it straight away.
iPhone mockup we made with Vexels:
- $9.99 – $89.99: Monthly subscription plans
- $90 – $816: Annual subscription plans
Last up in this main list of mockup generators we have Rotato which, like Mockuuups Studio, you have to download to your computer to use.
Rotato allows you to easily create static and animated iPhone mockups (as well as mockups featuring other devices).
Unlike some of the other premium mockup generators in this list, there’s no monthly fee for Rotato, you simply pay a one-time fee and you have lifetime access (but with only 1-year of updates).
At the moment Rotato has around 5 iPhone mockup templates, which is nowhere near the numbers of some of the other tools. However, the customization options available in Rotato make it a worthy addition to the list.
iPhone mockup from Rotato:
- Rotato Pro (Essentials pack): $59
- Rotato Pro (Student pack): $69
- Rotato Pro (Professional pack): $99
