Understanding the different font types
Here are the main types of fonts on Canva:

Serif
Serif fonts are typefaces with decorative lines or accents at the ends of the letter strokes.

- Della Respira
- Georgia Pro

- Style focus: Reliable, respectable, conventional, dependable, neutral
- Use cases: Often used in books, newspapers, and magazines as they are often very readable
- Work well with: San-Serif fonts due to the high level of contrast
Sans-Serif
Sans-serif fonts are typefaces without decorative lines or accents to give a cleaner more minimalist look and feel.
Some popular sans-serif fonts available on Canva include:

Sans-serif fonts are typefaces that are similar to serif but with the nodules and accents typically squared off.
Some popular slab-serif fonts available on Canva include:

- Style focus: Eye-catching, big, bold, impactful, influential

- Work well with: Sans-serif fonts
Questions to ask before choosing and combining fonts
Here are some questions to ask yourself before choosing and/or pairing fonts:
- Where are you going to be using the text/fonts? E.g. Website, online ads, print/posters, logo, etc.
- Will I need fonts that look good in big and small formats?
- What are you trying to promote/sell?
- Where are you promoting your designs to? e.g. Worldwide, a specific region?
- Who is your target audience?
- What are their traits e.g. adventurous, tech-savvy, creative, ambitious, family-orientated, etc.?
- What’s their age group?
- What’s their gender – male, female, both?
- How do you want to make the audience feel e.g. inspired, smart, exclusive, happy, excited, etc.?
- What do you want the audience to think about you/your product/service/event/etc. – e.g. bold/powerful, luxurious, friendly/approachable, trendy, etc.?
What makes a good font pairing
What exactly is a good font pairing? This is a difficult question to answer as it can come down to the theme and aesthetic you’re going for, and a little bit of intuition too.
However, there are some basic principles for successful font pairing and we cover these below:
Serifs and sans-serifs work well together
Mixing serif and san-serif fonts can often lead to a balanced, visually striking contrast:

Aim for complimentary moods
Pair fonts with similar tones and feel to ensure a cohesive and consistent brand look or aesthetic. This might even mean choosing fonts from the same period historically to create the mood you’re after.
For example, if you’re going for a vintage look make sure all fonts work for that theme:

Avoid fonts that are too similar (aim for contrast)
Avoid pairing fonts that are too similar. Doing so can make the designs bland, confusing, and make it challenging to create an obvious visual hierarchy.
Clear differences in weight or style can help the design emphasise key points or elements and help guide the viewer. Choose fonts that complement each other without competing. Don’t make the fonts too different either, just find a happy medium.
Some more ways to create contrast are – bold + non-bold, colour contrast, uppercase + lowercase, texture, and italic + regular:

Combine 3 fonts maximum
Limit your designs to three fonts to avoid visual clutter. Having too many can create a confusing and amateur look, so keep it to three or less for design harmony.
Three fonts combined can work though, particularly for designs that have more text such as posters or t-shirt designs:

Keep it simple and readable
Simplicity is often the best way to keep things attractive to the eye and can enhance readability. The key is to make the content of the design stand out, and correct font choice is a great way to do this.
If you have a lot of text in your design it’s vitally important to make it legible and easily digested.
An easy way to do this is to choose fonts from the same family but at different weights to create subtle contrast and variety:

Choose fonts that reflect your brand
If you have a clear tone and feel for your brand, choose fonts that reflect this to help showcase your brand personality:

Test and Adjust:
Don’t be afraid to experiment. Try out your designs on different screens and sizes to make sure they look great everywhere. And, be ready to tweak things if you need to before finalising your projects.
How to find font pairs in Canva
If you’re a little bit lazy, or you’re simply not sure where to start when it comes to creating your own font combinations then you can find existing font pairs (and/or font suggestions) in the Canva editor.
Here are some of our favourite ways to do just that:
Canva template search
Within the editor area, go to the ‘Design’ tab (1), and in the ‘Templates’ area (2) search for existing templates in the style that you’re looking for e.g. ‘Vintage’ (3):

Then hover over a template that has fonts that you’d like to use in your existing design, click on the three dots (1), and then click ‘Apply text only’ (2):

This will apply the font styles to your current design, and it’s a quick way to discover new fonts and pairings.
Font combination suggestions
Go to the ‘Text’ tab in the editor area (1), and scroll down to the ‘Font combinations’ section (2). From here you can choose from a range of preset font combinations that Canva has created:

There are plenty to choose from, and you might just find your ideal font combination or get some inspiration at the very least.
You can input a search term whilst in the ‘Text’ tab to narrow down the suggested font combinations. We’ll put in ‘Vintage’ again as an example (1):

Once you find something you like, you simply need to click on it to add to your design.
Browse ‘Font Sets’
When you’re editing a design, go to the ‘Design’ tab (1), navigate to the ‘Styles’ section (2), scroll down to ‘Font sets’ (3) and then click ‘See all’ (4):

You’ll now see some font combination suggestions, which you can add or apply to your existing design.
These font sets can also be filtered by theme e.g. ‘Bold’, ‘Modern’ or ‘Minimalist’ (1):

Recommended fonts
Select a text element in your design (1), click on the font options (2), and scroll down until you get to the ‘Recommended fonts’ (3):

These are fonts that Canva’s AI suggests that it thinks will work well with your design.
They’re not always the best suggestions in my opinion, but they can help you discover new fonts and quickly find new combinations that could work for your design.
